Presupposition Triggered by Temporal Connectives
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper 1 deals with presuppositional effects by the temporal discourse markers after and before within a multi-sentence discourse. By presenting data wrt. implicitly expressed causal relations, the proposal by Lascarides and Oberlander (1993) is criticised and a formalisation of the discourse usage of the two temporal connectives is given by extending van der Sandt’s (1992) approach to presupposition within DRT.

Incremental vs. symmetric accounts of presupposition projection: an experimental approach∗
The presupposition triggered by an expression E is generally satisfied by information that comes before rather than after E in the sentence or discourse. In Heim’s classic theory (1983), this left-right asymmetry is encoded in the lexical semantics of dynamic connectives and operators. But several recent analyses offer a more nuanced approach, in which presupposition satisfaction has two separa...
متن کاملNPI Licensing in Temporal Clauses
This paper offers a systematic approach to NPI licensing in temporal clauses based on a uniform analysis of temporal connectives as relations between times and relying on appropriate type shifting for compositional buildup. The quantificational force commonly associated with temporal connectives is attributed to the operators earliest and max operating on the temporal clause and effecting the n...
متن کاملNotes on presupposition and order of composition 1
The standard judgment (which I share) is that (1a) asserts rather than presupposes that France has a king. In contrast, (1b) presupposes that France has a king. Assuming that the and in (1) is the simple bivalent logical connective, the key difference appears to be the linear order of the conjuncts: in (1b), the information that France has a king arrives too late to help satisfy the presupposit...
متن کاملTransparency : An Incremental Theory of Presupposition Projection
We sketch a theory in which presuppositions do not directly impose conditions on the context set, but rather on the contextual meaning of a sentence. Specifically, a part of an expression's meaning which is marked as presupposed should satisfy a principle of Transparency, according to which this part can be disregarded without affecting the contextual meaning of the sentence. We argue that if T...
متن کامل‘Maximize Presupposition’ and Gricean Reasoning
Recent semantic research has made increasing use of a principle, ‘Maximize Presupposition’, which requires that under certain circumstances the strongest possible presupposition be marked (Sauerland 2006). This principle is generally taken to be irreducible to standard (neo-) Gricean reasoning because, by definition, the forms that are in competition have the same assertive component (Percus 20...
